Dreaded Obsessories

Whether your style is subtle, wild, or somewhere in between, Dreadlocks Unlocked has an obsessory for you. Dreadheads can choose from an impressive and ever-growing assortment of clips, beads, headbands, wraps, beanies, hair towels, shower caps, and more!

In this blog, I am sharing my current Top 5 Dreaded Obsessories, though these will undoubtedly change with the rapid expansion of the Styles Highfields in-salon range.

1. Sssssssay hello to my dread pet, Sammy Snake

These are quite a new kid (or reptile 😏) off the block and are unequivocally my favourite dread bead. I initially had one installed after colouring and loved it so much, I had another two installed after my maintenance session the following week. Installation of these guys is slightly different to ordinary dread beads in that they are twisted onto the dread, rather than pushed on.

The snakes are strong but also have just the right amount of give to allow them to be shaped across dread buns, and straightened out again when the locks are down or in a pony tail. Additionally, I've found they help the locks sit in place a bit more neatly when worn in a bun. This may be due to their length or weight, or perhaps a combination of the two.

Pricing will vary, depending on the number of snakes/spirals/beads purchased at any one time.

2. Dread Beanie

This genius creation not only keeps your dreaded head warm, but also creates an instant pony tail when you pull the dreads through the elasticised hole at the back. They are perfect for those cold winter mornings when it's so hard to get moving.

Sneaky Tip: If you keep one beside your bed, you'll have your hair done before your feet even hit the floor, saving precious time for the more important things in life...like coffee! 🍵

RRP: $22

3. Headbands

You can never, ever have too many headbands when you have dreads! The above retail at $10 each in-salon with many more colours and styles to choose from.

The dreaded guys are not forgotten, with a selection of wider and longer wraps in masculine and gender neutral colours.

4. Beads, Beads, Beads

The Dreadlocks Unlocked bead collection is astounding. There is a continually expanding variety of shapes, sizes, colours, and lengths. I have amassed an entire basketful at home, yet somehow always leave my appointments with newbies!

Beads are a great way to camouflage unwanted bumps or kinks in the dreads, and are simple to slide on and off. They can be doubled up, or even tripled up for a simple look change-up.

Another of my favourite bead styles is the cuff. These can be opened up and then wrapped into place at the desired section of the dread. This style is particularly useful for unusually small or large dreads.

5. Spiralocks

As dreads mature, regular hair bands often aren't large enough, or strong enough, to hold them. That's where this nifty little invention comes in. Spiralocks have a bendable wire in the centre and are near effortless to use.

For a dreaded ponytail, completely straighten the Spiralock, place it under your hair at the back of your neck, wrap it around the locks, and tighten by wrapping the Spiralock around the ponytail—that's it!

To create a bun: gather your dreads in a ponytail with your hands, twist the full ponytail of dreads, then twist the twisted ponytail around itself into a bun shape, and tuck the ends underneath. Secure the bun in place by wrapping the Spiralock snuggly around the bun's base, ensuring the spot where the ends are tucked in is covered. This will help keep the dreads in place.
